The Centuries Social Feed (Year-in-Review Portfolio) is a comprehensive, chronological assessment tool designed to help 8th-grade U.S. History students synthesize a full year of learning into a single, cohesive digital or physical portfolio. By translating complex historical narratives into the familiar language of social media, students demonstrate their understanding of character perspectives, political alliances, and the bitter rivalries that shaped the nation.

The Core Concept

Students act as digital curators for the past, creating a social media timeline that covers the entire 8th-grade curriculum. The project requires students to step into the shoes of one major historical figure from each of the eight primary units of study, from Colonization through the Industrial Revolution.

Key Project Components

  • The Era Checklist: Students must complete eight distinct profiles, ensuring every unit—including the American Revolution, Westward Expansion, and the Civil War—is represented in their final portfolio.

  • Profile Anatomy: Each of the eight profiles must include:

    • The Header: A creative handle (e.g., @TJeffs1776), a period-accurate bio, and location data.

    • The Network Box: A sidebar listing at least three historical "Mutuals/Friends" and three "Blocked" rivals.

    • The Feed: Two distinct posts—one reacting to a major event and one "Hot Take" on a controversial issue of the time.

  • The Comment Section (The Arguments): To demonstrate deep historical understanding, students must script "nested" comment threads where other historical figures argue with the main profile owner using historically accurate viewpoints.

Classroom Integration & Voting

The project culminates in a "Trending Topics" Gallery Walk. Portfolios are displayed throughout the classroom, and the entire class participates in a silent review. Students are provided with "Like" tokens to vote for the portfolios that feature the most creative designs and the most "savage" (yet historically accurate) comment-section debates.

Assessment & Grading

The included rubric provides a balanced evaluation of content and creativity:

  • Historical Accuracy & Voice (40%): Ensures posts reflect the specific political platforms and viewpoints of the chosen figures.

  • Historical Interactions (30%): Grades the accuracy of the "Mutuals" and "Blocked" lists as well as the validity of the arguments in the comment sections.

  • Visual Presentation & Effort (30%): Evaluates the cohesion of the social media layout and the effort made to translate complex history into concise, clever communication.

This project serves as a high-engagement alternative to traditional final exams, allowing students to showcase their historical expertise through creative, personality-driven storytelling.
